Sustainable fashion

On Tuesday, July 22, 2022, the fourth TED Group Discussion of the year, organized with the support of BancaStato, took place in Impact Hub Ticino. "Sustainable fashion" this was the theme of the event, which created among the participating audience an active debate in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The evening began with the screening of a TED Talk video, "3 creative ways to fix fashion's waste problem" by Amit Kalra, Finance Manager at Nike and fashion enthusiast. After the video screening, participants engaged in a constructive discussion, expressing ideas and visions through open conversation.

During the conversation, it emerged that transforming the fashion industry into a virtuous model of sustainability requires that consumers, brands, and governments begin to work collaboratively: brands have a responsibility to make sustainable products and alternatives more accessible to consumers; consumers have a responsibility to inform themselves and demand more sustainable products; and governments, for their part, to facilitate through regulations and directives, the transition to a fashion industry with less social and environmental impact.

In the past 10 years, innovation has made great strides in all areas related to the production cycle, from dyeing, to recycling of scrap , the creation of materials with less environmental impact. Sustainable and viable solutions and techniques do exist: the call is for brands to adopt and promote them on a lager scale, but without falling into green-washing practices.

We then come to the importance of the role of communication and reporting, both to help consumers in their choices and to monitor and compare the effects of production practices across the fashion industry... We need more data, more certain, more transparent, more comparable: Still a long challenge, but we have to start somewhere: the important thing is to be transparent with the consumer, who should never be deceived.

These were some of the themes that emerged during the conversation involving entrepreneurs, students, and professionals from the corporate, public, and nonprofit worlds. The conversation was facilitated by Impact Hub Ticino, with speeches by Claudio Boër, Professor and Consultant in Innovation and Sustainability, Scientific Advisor for ACSI; Marianella Cervi, Senior Manager, Sustainability & Responsibility, VF EMEA; Coty Jeronimus, Senior Sustainability Strategist, Fashion & Sporting goods, Quantis; and Roberto Lombardi, International Senior Director Internal Audit and Sustainability, Guess Europe. Everyone in the audience had the opportunity to take a seat on the "stage," and contribute to the discussion.

The event was organized thanks to the support of BancaStato. To relive the evening you will find HERE the link to the pictures (by our Hubber Egle Berruti Photographer) and drawings created live by Pierpaolo Barresi of Yobi Scribes that summarize the conversation.
